Troegs Craft Brewery – Master of Pumpkins (2014)

NicAA: Cloudy russet with a leggy, off-white head. You can smell the cinnamon and vanilla across the room, so inviting. 9/10

NicTM: Fuller body, moderate carbonation. Rich clove and honey meld with the peppery saison yeast, then lead you by the tastebuds to the pumpkin and vanilla. Rich. 9/10

NicP: The buttery, sweet Pennsylvania neck pumpkins are a delicious fresh addition here, and are flavorful enough to hold their own against fairly complex spicing. 5p

NicO: Big and flavor packed, every layer of this beer is wonderfully balanced. This beer aced it’s Master’s and should be working on it’s PhD. 91/100

AlexAA: Bright fruity notes, mainly apple, cloves, and honey make up a thick aroma from this burnt umber hued ale 9/10

AlexTM: Strong cloves and French saison yeast w/ a hint of apples and pumpkin that hit in the first wave of this complex pumpkin ale, it then deepens from an edge of ginger to a sweet vanilla honey finish w/ light cinnamon and nutmeg. 9/10

AlexP: The cloves and ginger are the loudest voice in this chorus, overwhelming pumpkins that peek thru shyly in presence but not in taste every so often. 3P

AlexO: Finally, a pumpkin ale with European flair – the saison yeast alone makes this Fancy Pants ale show off it’s flashy spicing in an elegant way. 90/100

Cambridge Brewing Company – The Great Pumpkin Ale (2014)

NicAA: Golden-orange, with a thin head. Aroma of caramel, malty, aromatic spices, mainly cinnamon and allspice. Hints of vanilla.

NicTM: Medium body, light carbonation. The fall spices aren’t strong, rather just a light fall jacket for the fleshy pumpkin. Brown sugar, vanilla. 8/10

NicP: Massachusetts local sugar pumpkin at it’s best. Sweet, fresh and low mileage, no cans in sight. Perfect. 5p

NicO: A true classic that uses incredibly fresh and wonderfully local ingredients, and doesn’t over complicate or hide behind heavy spice. 87/100

AlexAA: Pours a warm honey-toned amber, beautifully fresh pumpkin leads the aroma w/ hints of caramel and faint cinnamon. 9/10

AlexTM: Ribbons of caramel, buttery sugar pumpkins, and slight strains of vanilla, nutmeg & cinnamon trace a sweet outline that a mildly bitter hop lingers in. 8/10

AlexP: These massacred pumpkins did not die in vain – to those pumpkins about to die for this ale, we salute you. 5P

AlexO: Warm, buttery and sweet enough that you might just miss when it barbs you right as it leaves – never judge a dessert beer until it’s out the door. 88/100

Blue Moon Brewing Company – Harvest Pumpkin Ale

NicAA: Blood orange with a fluffy, fast fading head. Aroma of cloves, cinnamon, pumpkin puree, and the faint metallic odor of mass poduction. 7/10

NicTM: Thin, light malt and wheat and lots of cinnamon and clove. Too much clove. Tastes like pot pourri. I imagine. Ahem. 6/10

NicP: “Flavors like vine-ripened pumpkin”. Yeah I suppose vats of pumpkin puree are “like” that. Just like rollerskates are “like” a jetpack. 3p.

NicO: I’m mad at Alex for making me taste this again. It has the metallic taste of the sad you feel getting picked last in gym class. 60/100

AlexAA: Rusty orange w/unhealthy amount of cloves & nutmeg in the aroma, also a steel sheen to the smell 4/10

AlexTM: Watery, cloves, wheat, cloves, pumpkinishhhh, cloves, nutmeg, cloves. 4/10

AlexP: Yes, but by the aroma, I’m guessing they were leftover from last year’s doorstep. 3P

AlexO: Too much metal, and not the good kind, that coupled w/color, I think I need a tetanus shot w/ my glass of broken dreams. 45/100

Blue Point Brewing Co. – Pumpkin Ale (2014)

NicAA: Tea colored with a watery head. Pumpkin, ginger and cinnamon nose, biscuity malt. Slightly weird broccoli note. 7/10

NicTM: Thin, moderate carbonation, very light. Slight bitter hops, sweet pumpkin, then artificial spice, like a big red. 6/10

NicP: The best part of this fairly thin beer is the pumpkin, which does taste sweet, good quality and plentiful. 4p

NicO: Another in the not-bad-not-great category. I won’t remember this next year. Or after my next beer. The Bill Pullman of pumpkin beer. 69/100

AlexAA: clear amber pour w/ quickly fading lacing, a dollop of cinnamon fleshes out lightly for a very subtle aroma. 6/10

AlexTM: Barebones light body made up of brown sugar floating minimal quantities of cinnamon, nutmeg and pumpkin. 6/10

AlexP: It’s like these pumpkins thought they were going to miss the train, so they showed up unglammed up and w/ wet hair. 4P

AlexO: With nothing to hide behind, a small dose of pumpkins, light spicing, and a biscuity malt just can’t sustain a thicker body, or interest for that matter. 63/100

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company – Pumpkin Ale (2014)

NicAA: Clear, hay colored brew with a light head. Pumpkin puree and light spice aroma, both subtle. 7/10

NicTM: Malty, sweet pumpkin puree and the lightest hints of spice. Bright, citrusy hop profile, refreshing. Lighter body and smooth mouthfeel. 8/10

NicP: Flavorful and tasty smooth puree, accented by the fruitier, citrusy hops. 4p

NicO: A more citrusy, tropical feeling pumpkin beer, that utilizes spice but not in an overwhelming way. 84/100

AlexAA: Lightly orange w/slight haze, a mild sourness from pumpkin rises up in aroma but is then smoothed over w/nutmeg. 7/10

AlexTM: Brown sugar & nutmeg lead the way on this lighter bodied ale that stocks significantly sweeter pumpkin than you’d expect from aroma, dry finish w/ stronger hop presence cutting thru the caramel notes 7/10

AlexP: With spicing this subtle, you can trip over the vine into slightly too large a patch of pumpkins. 6p

AlexO: Nice. Fine. But when there are so many other options, this solid ale is easy to walk by and not notice. 76/100

Rogue Ales – Pumpkin Patch Ale (2014)

NicAA: Burnt sienna with almost no head. Big, musty vegetal aroma, hints of cola and very light fall spice. 8/10

NicTM: Toffee, molasses and sweet, fresh pumpkin. Vanilla and biscuity malt make a light, beady “crust”. 9/10

NicP: Pumpkins are exactly what make this beer so awesome. Not just an addition, a refreshing main player. 5p

NicO: Not a pie beer, this is a true PUMPKIN beer. Fresh, rindy, the subtlest spice…it’s almost crunchy. And I love it. 89/100

AlexAA: Deep russet jewel tone, thick cinnamon mingles w/molasses, pumpkin, mild cloves & slight ginger 9/10

AlexTM:  Warm cinnamon opens into barley malt & gobs of fresh pumpkin, cloves decorate the pumpkins throughout the flavor 8/10

AlexP: You know what pumpkin is better than yours? The juicy one Rogue grew themselves. 5P

AlexO: Frankly, these pumpkins don’t give a damn. They went big, not home. 90/100

21st Amendment Brewery and Elysian Brewing – He Said (Pumpkin Baltic Porter) (2014)

NicAA:Coal black with a thick mocha head and great lacing. Earthy, rich aroma with smoky hints, pumpkin cinnamon, and a hint of creamy vanilla. 10/10

NicTM: Fuller body, low carbonation. Nutty, bittersweet chocolate and decadent, rich spice. The smoky and bitter roasted malt keep the sweet pumpkin and spice in check perfectly. 10/10

NicP: Not overpowering, but that’s the best way for a porter. Fresh tasting, sweet and so well dressed it might as well be attending The Oscars. 5p

NicO: Earthy, musty, like stepping into a greenhouse overgrown with pumpkins, or petrichor, perhaps from the lager brewing. Unmissable. 94/100

AlexAA: Plummy black w/ coffee colored fluffy foam, anise-like aroma from the caraway seeds & slight, edgy cinnamon mix w/ the very present pumpkin. 9/10

AlexTM: Roasted malt, smoky pumpkin, a small fire from the Vietnamese cinnamon, with a bittersweet tapering 9/10

AlexP: The pumpkin is wrapped in a cloak of smoke, as those roasted over an open campfire – sweeter in aroma, fleshier in the mouth. 4P

AlexO: For the pumpkin naysayers, this smoky ball-buster is the trump card pumpkin that will change your mind. 93/100
