Blue Hills Brewery – Pumpkin Lager (2013)

NicAA: Light amber with huge lacy head and big whiffs of pumpkin meat. Slight pickle juice nose, not detecting any spice. 6/10

NicTM: Pumpkin sweeter than the nose and a brown sugar tone pops up unexpectedly. Vanilla hint, spices appear as it warms 8/10

NicP: Very fresh and much sweeter than last year. Heaps and heaps, at the center of the flavors. 8p

NicO: Nose is a little funky but a drinkable lager with character. Nice malt, strong pumpkin. Leaps above last year. 80/100

AlexAA: saccharine aroma, almost medicinal off the top of this slightly red-tinted, clear orange lager, pumpkin but LOTS of sugar 6/10

AlexTM: tart and dry, pumpkin is brown sugared up and doused in cinnamon and faint cloves and all-spice 6/10

AlexP: Twenty times more than was in Stingy Jack, but painted up all wrong 6P

AlexO: This Lager is tarted up like a baby prostitute that you’re friends with – you like who is underneath, but why so much rouge and mascara? 65/100

Two Roads Brewing Company – Roadsmary’s Baby (2013)

AlexAA: cloudy mahagony w/ cloves, rum, and the faintest vanilla swirl in this aroma 9/10

AlexTM: high carbonation, sweet pumpkin soaked in boozy rum, vanilla has a cream soda effect, slight hops on the back 8/10

AlexP: Sweet pumpkin and sweet rum duke it out like mean girls – pumpkin wins as the Regina George, here. 6P

AlexO: The rum barrel ice cream float of pumpkins – could’ve used more flavor aka spicing and less tonic, tho. 84/100

NicAA: Fluffy, full head sticks to the top of a deep ruby brew. Heady aroma of sweet pumpkin, light rum and cinnamon. 10/10

NicTM: Medium body, quite fizzy. Spices swirl around pumpkin, then vanilla notes move into a boozy, lingering rum warmth. 8/10

NicP: Gobs of gourd, and fresh tasting. Holds its own easily in a pretty complex mix. Kudos on the name and label too. 6p

NicO: Rum barrel aged but not overdone. Unlike its namesake, it’s no horror show. Cradle it in your beer-drinkin’ hand. 89/100

Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. – Kentucky Pumpkin Barrel Ale (2013)

AlexAA: honey-toned pale orange w/ light frothy foam, bourbon and vanilla control the aroma, with the faintest hint of pumpkin 9/10

AlexTM: very soft oaky bourbon swirls w/ light caramel & faint cinnamon & pumpkin, once it warms. 9/10

AlexP: Competing with bourbon, the wood, and moderate spicing, tasting pumpkin this much shouldn’t be possible, but it is. 5P

AlexO: This ale combines nutty pumpkin pie w/ a bourbon neat in one – the only thing missing? A pipe & cherry tobacco. 93/100

NicAA: Bright orange, effervescent, white clingy head. Bourbon and candy-like sweet pecan aroma, tinged w. pumpkin. 9/10

NicTM: Staggeringly light for 10% ABV. Way less complex than aroma. Caramel malt, sweet pecan, v. smooth bourbon finish. 9/10

NicP: Very light pumpkin but what there is is very fresh tasting. Works really well at smoothing out the bourbon. 4p

NicO: Well, I thought I’d seen it all. Then this came along and threw my tastebuds a curveball. And I really liked it. 90/100

Coddington Brewing Co.’s – Pumpkin Ale (2013)

AlexAA: pours the color and bubbliness of ginger ale, smells likes vanilla and sugar cookies & pie crust. 9/10

AlexTM: light, bubbly, with pumpkin, vanilla and brown sugar melt in a menage a trois of a mini pumpkin pie. 9/10

AlexP: Light, but balanced…this pumpkin is a lady. 4P

AlexO: This is the afternoon tea of pumpkin beers: refreshing, delicate, and a tasty treat. 92/100

NicAA: Light bronze, fast fading head. Biscuity malt and inviting fall spice. Brown sugar, vanilla, my mouth is watering! 9/10

NicTM: Delicate flavor compared to aroma but pumpkin-pie rich and very balanced. Med body and carb. Savory and delicious! 9/10

NicP: Not hugely apparent but weaved so nicely into a tasty spice and malt background. 5p

NicO: A lighter pumpkin beer that has all the flavors but no crazy ABV. I would session the sh*t out of this beer. 89/100

Terrapin Beer Co. – Pumpkinfest (2013)

NicAA: Light head floats on hazy burnt sienna brew, giving big whiffs of cinnamon and sweet pumpkin with hints of molasses. 9/10

NicTM: All business upfront w. heavy allspice and cinnamon, moving to unexpectedly light finish, marzen-esque. Unique. 9/10

NicP: Smooth puree, which is often bland but here works well and balances with the aggressive spice and malt. 4p

NicO: Generous spice but not overdone, and light Octoberfest style finish means you can enjoy a few. I like Terrapins. 89/100

AlexAA: cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin mix in a heavily sweetened aroma off of this hazy blood orange brew 7/10

AlexTM: mildly tart, big burst of cinnamon & nutmeg w/ sweet pumpkin following, & the lightest of bitter hops in finish. 8/10

AlexP: Plays bigger role in aroma, but balances out what could’ve been heavy handing of spices. Needs a malt anchor tho. 4P

AlexO: Pleasing, not pushy, hits many tastes quickly. I’d drink again if served, but wouldn’t seek out on own merit. 79/100

Bethlehem Brew Works – Fegley’s Devious Imperial Pumpkin (2013)

48th beer of 61: Bethlehem Brew Works Fegley’s Devious Imperial Pumpkin

AlexAA: deep bronze w/ no head retention & an enticing aroma of cloves, pumpkin, nutmeg and ginger. 10/10

AlexTM: light body but full blast wall of spices: all-spice, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla swirls on the backtest 9/10

AlexP: More obvious on the nose, but the sweetness they add counter the bitter effect of intense spicing and ginger edge. 4P

AlexO: All spices at once but doesn’t blow the load – it dissipates into bittersweet, boozy mouthful. Tastes like Fall. 91/100

NicAA: Bright headless amber with spice you can smell across a room. Cinnamon, clove, vanilla and allspice jostle. Yes! 10/10

NicTM: Rich, thick, big cinnamon and nutmeg upfront with boozy sweet pumpkin-vanilla finish. Medium to low fizz, warming. 8/10

NicP: A heavier pumpkinbeer in which the pumpkin is fairly shrouded by the spice and booziness. It’s not lost though. 3p

NicO: Reach for this to soothe aching muscles from snow shoveling, in that warm glow moment.Rich, life-affirming treat. 90/100

Beer Works – Pumpkin Works Ale (2013)

NicAA: Orange, clear and zero head. Cinnamon, light malt, not much else. Sigh. 5/10

NicTM: Odd walnut taste, fishy taste, malt, then…nothing. Thin mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Slight burnt molasses. 5/10

NicP: What pumpkin there is tastes burnt and weirdly watery at the same time. 2p

NicO: So forgettable I forgot how much I thought this was forgettable last year. Wait, what? 50/10

AlexAA: bright, clear candy orange and light foam. Abundant cinnamon and sour pumpkin to the nose. 4/10

AlexTM: thin, there’s slight sour, almost rotten, pumpkin first, then a small amount of brown sugar malt & cinnamon, then, a cringe-inducing aftertaste. 2/10

AlexP: Seeing as pumpkin is one of the few tastes here, I know it’s there – sadly, they used the one that was on their stoop until Nov. 21st. Rotten. 2P

AlexO: No body, mistreated pumpkin, lazy spicing = shoddy work. If you are not going to craft a recipe, then don’t brew. 30/100
