This is the home of our reviews from our Freshman season. Find out what we thought of our first 61 beers!

Avery Brewing Company – Rumpkin (2012)

AlexAA: deep, clear mahagonny w/ carbonation + no head, sticky sweet molasses musk from rum barrels – thick air! 8/10

AlexTM: candied sugars + barley malt drip through this yeasty, syrupy ale – the rum overtones control all but the ginger in the spicing 7/10

AlexP: hard to say the quantity, as there are many conflicting flavors – the ale is dense and sweet, and the pumpkins are candy coated 3/10

AlexO: Sipper for sure, it deserves a decanter for its smooth smack on the way down – probly could cure most ills, too, w/ this kick! 78/100

NicAA: Light cola color with very little head. Aroma is strongly of rum and spices, liqueur-like. Oaky, cinnamon, alcohol. 8/10

NicTM:Very strong rum flavor, with a little sweet from molasses and moderate fall spices. Light liquor burn in finish. High carb, thick 8/10

NicP: Pumpkin really got lost in here for me under the extremely strong liquor and oak profile. More a spiced oak beer. 0 pumpkins

NicO: Fireside sippin’ pumpkin, which isn’t pumpkiny but is big and interesting nonetheless. Rum barrels is a novel take and it works. 81/100

Elysian Brewing – Blight (Beer #8 of the 12 Beers of the Apocalypse) (2012)

AlexAA: dense copper tone, heavy air with cinnamon and brown sugar 9/10

AlexTM: fully body w/ much depth from the reaches of the Vietnamese cinnamon, almost a fire to the sweetness 8/10

AlexP: Despite this being a cinnamon beer w/ pumpkin, the amount of pumpkins is still sizeable 4/10

AlexO: A heavy dessert feel to this ale – a happy ending to the apocalypse? 90/100

NicAA: Aroma hits big and hearty on the brown sugar, and the sweetness is mixed with cinnamon. Rich honey color with little head. 9/10

NicTM: Matches aroma well; tastes of caramelized brown sugar + cinnamon bite, raisins, maybe molasses. Almost rum-like. Thick, low fizz.9/20

NicP: In a big heavy beer like this not surprisingly the pumpkin gets a bit lost. It’s a light touch, behind the sugar and spice. 1 pumpkin

NicO:This spice/sugar mix make this winter beer, like drinking a fruitcake or Christmas Pudding. I almost expect to find a sixpence in it. 88/100

Cambridge Brewing Company – Grey Ghost (2012)

AlexAA: marigold toned, translucent, light, white foam – scents heavy w/ orange and pumpkin. 10/10

AlexTM: medium-bodied wheat w/ coriander and orange. There is a fresh pumpkin to the weight, as well. 9/10

AlexP: Perfectly balanced with the citrus and spice – not an easy feat. 5/10

AlexO: Citrus + pumpkin combined needs heavy hitter coriander to meld together perfectly. This is a stellar addition to pmpkn beer. 97/100

NicAA: Orange haze with no real head. Aroma is mixed sweet and sour, a little orange zest and wheat, yeast. Some peppery aroma. 7/10

NicTM: Grains of paradise in plenty, fruity yeast and wheat with a little pumpkin sweetness. Citrus tang. Med body, low carbonation. 8/10

NicP: Yeah, but a little hidden behind the pretty strong peppery flavor of the grains of paradise, and the fruity citrus. 2 pumpkins

NicO: Experimental. Grains of paradise+citrus zip make it feel like a summery pumpkin. Works well on sunny fall day in CBC beer yard. 84/100

Uinta Brewing – Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin (2012)

NicAA: Thick head like a memory foam mattress, great retention. Clear almost red color, with big pumpkin aroma, orange peel and oak.  9/10

NicTM: Heavy, full bodied, low carb. Big bold flavors of strong oak, orange peel, some cinnamon and fall spices. Boozy in the finish. 9/10

NicP: Pumpkin in the aroma more than the flavor as this beer is bold in other ways, but it is there. Just hiding in the oakiness 2 pumpkins.

NicO:Big boozy offering from Uinta warms+delights w. huge flavors+oak edge. Pricey, so not your fall staple, but a great autumn treat. 88/100

AlexAA: glowing ruby red w/ visible carbonation and light tan head, tart pumpkin, clove + cinnamon 9/10

AlexTM: strong barley, cloves and sweet, dry finish w/ slight alcohol in the aftertaste, pumpkin is covered partially 8/10

AlexP: Much more present in smell than in taste once woven w/ complexities of the oak overtones 2/10

AlexO: the oak aging lends bourbon overtones to this Imperial, would pair nicely at end of a five-course feast or in front of a fire 85/100

Jack’s Abby Brewing – Pumpkin Crop Lager (Mom & Pop’s Harvest Series) (2012)

NicAA: Cloudy deep rust color pour with good head and retention. Huge pumpkin meat aroma, along with a nice lineup of fall spice. 9/10

NicTM: Tastes of generous pumpkin +squash, and spice is more muted here than in the aroma. Light/med body and med carb. Refreshing! 8/10

NicP: Big. This has a really great taste of fresh and ripe pumpkin, which is backed up with a nice sweet squash taste. Fresh + bountiful. 8p

NicO: If you’re gonna make a classic pumpkin lager, this is it. Light spice, plenty of pumpkin, and porch-worthy on a sunny fall day. 89/100

Elysian Brewing – The Great Pumpkin Imperial Ale (2012)

NicAA: A muddy amber with small head that disappears fast, W visibly low carb. Cinnamon + ginger in front of pumpkin, malt + molasses. 8/10

NicTM: V. low carbonation, med body. Strong cinnamon and nutmeg, a little ginger and maybe mace? Spices swirl around the pumpkin nicely 8/10

NicP: Good. There is a medium to high amount of pumpkin here and it’s spice buddies are making it shine. 6 pumpkins

NicO: This is the classic imperial pumpkin. A perfectly crafted imperial with balanced spices and wonderful pumpkin flavor. A must. 90/100

AlexAA: a starkly vivid orange w/ no head and a light cloudiness, a metallic smell of pumpkin and cloves 8/10

AlexTM: a meaty pumpkin taste lightly spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon, very slight hoppy bitterness balanced the melty brown sugar 8/10

AlexP: some of the freshest pumpkin to date in an ale, light toastiness and chunky depth 6/10

AlexO: spiced lighter than other Imperials, very crisp finish + the hops add the finishing touch to this choice ale. Pretty lovely! 87/100

Brewery Timmerman’s – Pumpkin Lambicus (2012)

NicAA: Straw colored pour with a finger head and good retention. Aroma – weirdly little. A bit of yeast and tartness, but not much more.5/10

NicTM: Well, sour as expected, vinegar tones, coriander. Earthy pumpkin taste in the finish with a hint of sweetness, spice as warms up 7/10

NicP: The pumpkin in this is brought out in a more raw, earthy way than regular pumpkin brews, but not unripe. Just, not as expected. 3 p

NicO: If you’re a fan of lambics this might be a great seasonal for you. As I’m not really it’s hard to rate, but I’d pass in future. 68/100

AlexAA: clear rust color with an aroma of tartness, apple and a sticky sour malt 5/10

AlexTM: early onset of sweet apple and pumpkin + carbonation, then brown sugar, then to the sourness of the malt for the aftertaste 7/10

AlexP: very sweet handling of the pumpkin here, which is a nice foil to how tart the apple is. 6/10

AlexO: The chalky feeling it leaves makes me continue sipping, but the amount of fruit/pumpkin/SUGAR would be overwhelming for just 1 69/100
