Matt Brewing Co. – Saranac Pumpkin Ale (2015)

08 Sep

What happens when you carbonate a beer so much that you Lenny out (yes, that’s an “Of Mice and Men” reference) all the taste of pounds of pumpkin, nutmeg, cloves, all-spice, ginger, and cinnamon? You get Saranac Pumpkin Ale. This tawny, brown ale gives off a distinct, not necessarily promising, aroma of malty pumpkin, cloves, and nutmeg with an oaky accent. Upon taste, though, almost all these potent scents are diluted away by a cream soda carbonation effect leaving loads of unspiced, squashy pumpkin and no towel of spices to hide behind.

I love a nice hardy, earthy take on pumpkin, but without the benefit of any spice sticking to the taste, this is more like seeing a make-upless townie pumpkin in HD. 62/100

Nic’s thoughts from a past year: Let’s face it pumpkin alone isn’t an exciting flavor. In a dull beer base, with no garnish, you get bland beer. 60/100
