Heading out to a beautiful wedding this weekend in Michigan provided just enough time for a quick field trip to Greenbush Brewing to check out their pumpkin ale, Unicorn Killer. Such a name already filled me with preconceived notions of edgy spicing, and a harsh rawness. This ale began with an almost imperceptible aroma of toasted pumpkin. The refreshing crispness kicked off this light ale, and small dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg accented the fresh, local pumpkins in a farm fresh barely clothed veggie manner, then tapered out with a gentle heat from the spicing.
Apparently, this Killer once slayed with some peppercorn and coriander in his barrage of death. Damn, I want to meet that Killer. As any Potter fan will recall the words of Firenze on killing a unicorn: “Only one who has nothing to lose, and everything to gain, would commit such a crime”. I hope this Killer gives into committing heinous slaughter next year by kicking up the spice and taking names – a solid ale would only have EVERYTHING to gain by it. 80/100
