Samuel Adams – Harvest Pumpkin Ale (2013)

NicAA: Deep ruby with thin head, clear. Sweet aroma of malt and pumpkin hints, with light spicing. Hint of orange peel. 8/10

NicTM: Very low spice, quite bitter hops. No sweetness like the aroma suggested. Woody quality. Medium body, high carb. 7/10

NicP: More than last year, and props for using fresh. Sadly, it’s just not backed up. Cinnamon alone doesn’t cut it. 4p

NicO: Better than last year, still a way to go. Bitter, and traditional style needs more spice. Nothing revolutionary. 69/100

AlexAA: deep, blood red tinted brown, light head, aroma of molasses, sweet malt, and allspice 6/10

AlexTM: thin body, drinks lighter than it looks, heavy malt overpowers spice, cinnamon is faint 6/10

AlexP: I know they use 17 lbs, but I think the ratio is off w/ the 4 malts. 2P

AlexO: Sugary malt takes over what might be a nicely spiced, fresh pumpkin beer – a better recipe than last year, tho 61/100

Curious Traveler – Jack ‘O’ Shandy (2013)

NicAA: Rich straw color, clear, light foam. Brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg predominantly. Smells like pie! 8/10

NicTM: Very light body, watery mouthfeel. Nice spice with lemon actually working well with the pumpkin and fall spice. 8/10

NicP: There’s a decent amount of sweet gourd in this. Amazingly the lemon helps bring it out, rather than clashing. 5p

NicO: I admit, expected it to suck. Lemon-pumpkin shandy? Ew! Wrong. Tasty fall BBQ beer that won’t leave you crapulous.77/100

AlexAA: lemon and cinnamon dominate the aroma on this mahogany toned shandy 7/10

AlexTM: Holy lemon peel, Batman! Very light-bodied w/ pumpkin mixing in the intense sweetness. Combo has a tea effect. 4/10

AlexP: Difficult to gauge in this shandy, as the lemon is the main character, but it is distinguishable w/ sip after sip. 4P

AlexO: Mad points for the label w/ mustachioed Pumpkin. Not my jams, but if you like twisted teas, it might be yours. 55/100

Wolaver’s Organic – Pumpkin Ale (2013)

AlexA: hazy unfiltered blood orange that has chunky fresh pumpkin w/ lightly sprinkled smoky cinnamon on the nose 8/10

AlexTM: thin body, this is a harvest, earthy pumpkin empowered taste w/ a dry finish – a touch of nutmeg fleshes it out 7/10

AlexP: When they say organic Vermont pumpkins, they mean it. These pumpkins are blasting Phish right now. 6P

AlexO: The hippie cousin of pumpkin beers. I want to drink it out of mason jars. Fresh, Raw, Crisp. Delightful! 77/100

NicAA: Clear amber with thin head. Aroma of sweet pumpkin, brown sugar and vanilla. Not much fall spice. Fresh. 9/10

NicTM: Nowhere near so sweet as the aroma. Low carb and light, malty, a little nutmeg, pumpkin and hints of vanilla. 7/10

NicP: The pumpkin in here is tasty and fairly plentiful. This has a rough pumpkin quality, but that’s not a bad thing here. 5p

NicO: Light spice lets the organic VT pumpkin shine. Fresh and clean, but…like an unseasoned veggie plate, not exciting.79/100

Brooklyn Brewery – Post Road Pumpkin (2013)

NicAA: Straw colored, visibly high carbonation w. thin head. Aroma has no spice, just vegetable scent, like carrots. Odd. 5/10

NicTM: Very fizzy, pretty thin. Cinnamon, a touch of nutmeg and then…nothing. Super watery finish. Molasses as it warms. 5/10

NicP: There’s a watery pumpkin taste in here, it just comes off as bland along with the rest of the washy flavors. 2p

NicO: The high carb makes this subtly flavored beer hard to appreciate. Better as it warms, and de-gasses a little. 69/100

AlexA: bright amber w/ 1/4 inch foam, subtle cinnamon aroma, visible carbonation 6/10

AlexTM: super thin body, barley is the main course w/ minimal nutmeg adding itself to a sweetness that stems out of malt 6/10

AlexP: It’s there tasting almost a V8 vegetable beer in style, tho not heavy in amount 3P

AlexO: The barley sits on a thin ribbon of caramel, but lack of spicing keeps this beer from the next level, or being interesting at all. 62/100

Beer Works – Black ‘O’ Lantern (2013)

NicAA: Dark coffee w. a thin khaki head. Aroma heady w. nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses. Perhaps a touch of ginger. Inviting! 9/10

NicTM: Good chewy mouthfeel w. high carb. Coffee punch, choc, roasty malts and a little burn in the end. Not much spice. 7/10

NicP: The pumpkin is a nice in the aroma but subtle among the bitter roasty malt. Adds a tiny, welcome sweetness in finish 1p

NicO: Nice imperial stout that smells like pumpkinbeer. Great mouthfeel + aroma, coffee/ choc. Subtle, but it works! 80/100

AlexAA: slightly reddened opaque brown, w/ minimal head. Cloves are dominant in this aroma w/ a hint of espresso 8/10

AlexTM: overtly roasty malt coupled with unspiced fresh pumpkin. Cinnamon and cloves kick thru at the end as the gourd fades 5/10

AlexP: There and accounted for, but wearing too few clothes, cutting through malt, but lacking any spice. 5P

AlexO: Aroma is more exciting than actual ratio of ingredients – more spice, please! The aftertaste is too raw. 63/100

Ithaca Brewing Company – Country Pumpkin (2013)

NicAA: from bottle. Aroma of cinnamon, light brown sugar and vanilla tones and pumpkin. 8/10

NicTM: Light and low carbonation. A touch of cinnamon and allspice, this isn’t sweet like many. Pumpkin lingers in the finish. 7/10

NicP: Nice amount of decent pumpkin taste. Doesn’t taste like cheap purée pumpkin. 5p

NicO: A quality early fall beer that drinks easy and has all the good points of a clean, fresh tasting pumpkin ale. Goldilocks for pumpkin beer newcomers. 84/100

AlexAA: Strong pumpkin and light cinnamon waft from this tawny, clear orange 9/10

AlexTM: light bodied & watery, clean pumpkin w/ light dashes of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves 8/10

AlexP: YES. Never apologize for your product – pumpkin is pumpkin, keeping it simple & clean works like magic. 5P

AlexO: Clean, refreshing, and highly session-able. No frou-frou for this pumpkin, because a simple suit can still say CLASS. 88/100

Blue Point Brewing Company: Pumpkin Ale (2013)

AlexAA: looks almost identical to a cream soda, but smells lightly of pumpkin and cinnamon 7/10

AlexTM: light body, but moderate carbonation – cinnamon and pumpkin are the two players here, w/ slight brown sugar 7/10

AlexP: Pumpkin is a major character here w/out being dolled up at by overspicing – ohhh, THAT’S what pumpkin tastes like. 4P

AlexO: Doesn’t hit heavy considering it’s 6%, but a little on the thin side. The pumpkin is refreshing, a solid sixer. 76/100

NicAA: Clear copper pour with thick, fast fading head. Cinnamon, light malt and pumpkin puree aroma. Extremely light. 7/10

NicTM: Thin, low carb. Slightly vegetal, light spice and sweet biscuit malt. Not a lot of huge flavors on here. 7/10

NicP: Light on the pumpkin puree which isn’t trussed in a ton spice garnish, so makes a kind of watery pumpkininess. 4p

NicO: Simple, clean. It’s a pumpkin lite, for those sunny fall days. Low spice, modest pumpkin. It gets to the point. 77/100
